Introduction
In the Old Covenant which was a covenant of the letter, Yahuwah raised up prophets who spoke his word to the people who in general did not have the gift of prophesying or the role prophet. The 70 elders who ascended the mountain with Moses to eat the meal of the covenant each received the Spirit of Yahuwah by which they could prophesy. However, Moses had a prayer in his heart and his prayer was that all Israel would have the Spirit and would be able to prophesy. Yahuwah heard Mose’s prayer for in the book of Joel Yahuwah promises that a day would come when he would pour out his Spirit upon all flesh. Not just Israel and her sons and daughters but on their male and female servants also. This promise was made by Yahuwah hundred of years later through the mouth and writings of the prophet Joel. The beginning of the fulfillment of the word of Yahuwah in Joel 2 was on Shavuot year one day one of the Church and Year 30 of the Mashiach that is AD30.
No longer was prophecy restricted it was available to the whole community and the community of Mashiach was born prophesying. It was only after King Saul prophesied that he could know that Yahuwah was with him in what he did and David said: “The Spirit of Yahuwah spoke by me his word was in my tongue” (2 Samuel 23). These two were the first messianic kings and the Spirit left Saul at some point and went over to David. They pointed to the ultimate Messiah Yeshua and his Messianic community. We can read about this in Acts chapter 2 of the New Covenant. The prophetic gift will be taken away only when the perfect comes and so the prophetic gift has abided in the Church in one way or another for the last two thousand years. Prophecy is a spiritual blessing and Paul says in the Letter to the Ephesians that in Mashiach Yeshua the Church has every Spiritual gift in heavenly places. The order of prophecy of the New Covenant is not the same as that of the Old Covenant. For example, in the New Covenant there is no death sentence if a prophecy is wrong but a discernment as to the source of the prophecy and as to whether the prophecy should be listened to or not. In the Old Covenant most of the prophecies came after a declaration “Thus says Yahuwah”, but the New Covenant prophetic word is to all nations and they speak various languages and so the Spirit uses the words appropriate to the particular community involved. Sometimes the phrase will be “Thus says the Holy Spirit” as in the case of Abagus, sometimes Yeshua himself is the Speaker, as in the case of Paul receiving his encounter with Yahuwah on the road to Damascus and Ananias who was sent to pray for him. Sometimes it is an angel as with Paul on his way to Rome and John in the Apocalypse. The New Covenant saints are not prophesying to a political community at home with a temple and with the full authority of the state to punish by death. But the New Covenant community submits to the authority of unbelieving governments until the Son has finished abolishing all rule and authority. Then the Saints will take over and reign completely. In the meantime, prophecy is used as one of the weapons of the Church to bring the reign of Mashiach into full fruition. Indeed the witness of Yeshua is the Spirit of prophecy. The Spirit always bears witness to Yeshua and his resurrection.
